Name of Author :
Dr. Shubhra Tripathi
Abstract:
The concept of Sustainable development aims to protect our environment so that future generation need not to compromise with its necessities. In this context, role of educational institutions becomes very important because not only they are centres of education but also centres of transmission of cultural heritage. Higher education institutes in India can contribute in increasing environmental awareness in youths. Meeting the essential demands regarding sustainable development needs a multidimensional strategy because sustainable development is not limited to environmental preservation only. Apart from preservation, sustainable development demands maintenance, restoration, long and prolific use, effective and inclusive policies, etc. Higher education Institutes can play an important role in sustainable development of any country for which a multidimensional well-built strategy is essential. The present study provides multi-dimensional implementational strategies needed to be practiced in higher education of India so that right attitude and spirit of sustainability is cultivated among the students towards environment. Reducing awareness-behaviour gap through well build content and carefully designed learning strategies is imperative. This measure will not prove effective in isolation. Along with this, various methods concerning institutional structure and its organisation should be implemented to facilitate environmental sustainability efforts.
