Loss of Cultural Memory of Animal Performers: A Study of Friends Forever
Name of Author :
Dr. Kiran Kumar Golla
Abstract:
Friends Forever is the translated version of Jigiri, a famous Telugu novel in contemporary Telugu literature. Prof. P. Jayalakshmi translated the novel into English. The present article critically responds to the English version of the novel. It was published it in 2007. The Novel portrays a touching story, a cherished and a humanly relation between a man and an animal who lived as family members in a small remote village. The novel also depicts how the Dudekula community has lost its cultural memory in the modern era. Hence the paper answers certain heart-warming questions like; what are the cultural memories and how they are lost, the impact of modernization on the lives of the indigenous people and their community professions. Imam is the protagonist of the novel. He belongs to a Muslim minority community called Doodekula. Urdu is the mother tongue of the above community but mostly they communicate in Telugu language. By looking at Imam’s family and their livelihood, one can understand how minority community led their lives.
