Kari: Navigating Queerness in the Urban Jungle
Name of Author :
Ponnu Liz Malieckal
Abstract:
This paper is an attempt to delve into the world of graphic novels and that too in particular Indian graphic novels. The study is done with the aid of Amruta Patils Kari, the first Indian female written queer graphic novel. The work is prominent in the field of graphic novels and has garnered a special status among Indian graphic novels for dealing with themes like homosexuality, identity crisis, urban realities etc The main discussion is conducted on two important aspects of the novel Kari. Kari is discussed as a lesbian narrative. Being the first Indian graphic novel on homosexuality, a close analysis is done on the novel in terms of its queer aspects. We analyse Kari and her relationship with other characters especially her relationship with Ruth, her lover, and her roommates. Also questions related to identity crisis, stereotypical representation of the queer are discussed. The discussion then moves on to the fact how the author has depicted the cityscape through the artistic panels and how the urbanness of the smog city is a major contributor to the novel. The study concludes by analysing the scope of graphic narratives in the long run.
