Exhibit and Exploit the Female Body: An Analysis of Item Songs Based on Objectification Theory

Abstract:
Cinema plays a significant role of influence in the daily life of people. The item songs have become an important element of Indian Films. They become popular not only in India but across the globe. Women are highlighted as a commodity and presented as they are meant for male consumption. Inserting an item song is not a new trend in Indian Cinema. It is a clever and materialistic trick to gain the attention of the viewers. The word item is synonymous with object. The objectification of women as an item is apparent in these songs. Dirty lyrics are used to enrich the popularity of these songs. The paper makes analyses of the item songs of five languages namely Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada to examine the exhibit and exploit of female body in the light of objectification theory.
