Abstract:
Ramayana is one of the two epic poems of India, the other being the Mahabharata. The Ramayana was composed in Sanskrit, probably not before 300 B.C. by the great poet Valmiki, and its present form consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. Valmiki Ramayana consists of all the epic features. Art of characterization, various kinds of events, values and morality taught in each episode and the beauty of words are the basic factors for the immense popularity of this text. Analysis of this great epic Ramayana, as a pure literary work without the attachment of the religious connotations, shows a complex story that weaves a web of heroism, idealism, adventures, romance, familial ties, and Dharma. Being the cause of the contention for the skeptics, this text got the elevated stature of a holy and religious text.
