A Critical Analysis on Introduction of Mixed Electoral System in Local Authorities of Sri Lanka

Abstract:
Election is one of the most important factors in deciding the victory of democracy. Rulers are elected from various sort of elections according to the features of the countries in the world. If there were so many shortages in the practically found proportional Representative system in Sri Lanka. Therefore, it was said to be changed. At the begin, Mixed Electoral system was introduced for Local Government Authorities in the history of Sri Lankan election system. Likely, the Mixed Electoral System for Local Government Authorities has been created continuous Election Amendment Acts. Ultimately, According to the No. 16 of 2017 Local Government elections Act for the 341 Local Government Authorities (24 Municipal Councils, 41 Urban Councils, 276 Pradeshiya Sabhas) have been conducted at one time on 10.02.2018. The 60% of members are elected from single or multi wards and other 40% members are elected from additional Proportional members via list to the local authorities. Among the total members of in it, 25% is to be women representation.
