Discontented Desire of Women: A Thematic Analysis in the Select Novels of Shashi Deshpande
Name of Author :
Dr. S. Sandhya & A. Nareshkumar
Abstract:
Shashi Deshpande is very much conscious of the weak conditions as well as the secondary status of the Indian women. She represents the inner world of the Indian women and her heroines are shown in a realistic manner. She thinks about the situation and their fate in the fast-changing socio-economic milieu of India. She observes that women play a secondary role to men in real life. She feels that women have tremendous inner power, but so much of that strength is used up in merely enduring. She makes an attempt to explore the inner psyche of the women who are at the cross lines between tradition and modernity. Most of the novels of her inform the story of women who are the victims of exploitation, separation, negligence and even rape by their own family members. The theme of desire dealt with the perverted memories of their loved ones, pain that come out of poverty, social injustice to women done by the State apparatus like police and professionals are revealed. This paper attempts to reveal the discontented desire of women who endure silently even after the advent of education in the postmodern world.
