Using Christian Songs to Teach English Language: A Multiple Intelligences Approach
Name of Author :
Dr. D. Joy Christina Sara Jayakodi, Rev. Fr. Rajendran
Abstract:
This article examines the pedagogical value of integrating Howard Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) with the use of Christian songs in teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL,EFL). Music has long been recognized as a powerful resource in language education, offering repetition, rhythm, emotional engagement, and meaningful context. In faith based educational settings, Christian songs represent culturally familiar and affectively rich materials that can be pedagogically capitalized to enhance language learning. Drawing on MI theory, second language acquisition principles, and music assisted language learning research, this article proposes a mixed methods quasi experimental model to investigate the impact of MI informed, song based instruction on learners vocabulary acquisition, oral fluency, and motivation. A sample lesson framework is presented to demonstrate classroom implementation. The article argues that combining Christian songs with MI based activities promotes inclusive, learner centered instruction and supports both linguistic development and learner engagement in faith oriented contexts.
