Role of Higher Education in Sustainable Development
Name of Author :
Sunil Chauhan
Abstract:
Increasing environmental problems, social inequality, and economic instability have made sustainable development a global priority. Higher education institutions (HEIs) play a key role in promoting sustainable development through the provision of education, conducting research, fostering innovation and engaging with communities. Universities are recognized as key actors in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through knowledge creation and skills development. This research paper examines the concept of sustainability and the role of higher education in achieving sustainability through curriculum development, research, community engagement, and sustainable campus initiatives. It also highlights the challenges facing higher education institutions and makes recommendations to strengthen the integration of sustainability. The paper concludes that higher education is a key driver of sustainable development, contributing to environmental protection, social progress, and economic growth.
