Shashi Deshpandes That Long Silence

Abstract:
Shashi Deshpande, one of the renowned Indian novelists, has focused on the social world of complex relationships, both maternal and paternal. Women narrators in her fiction transcend their fender in order to explore the male psyche and avoid stereotypical projections of patriarchal structures. Shashi Deshpandes novels explore the patriarchal set up of India and her protagonists, located within this social reality, reach out to define the „self in an attempt to free themselves. She explores the individual and universal predicaments through the female psyche. She gives minute details of development of a girl-child in her novels and sheds light on the different problems a girl faces within the family.
