Predicament of Self Identity in Anita Desais Fire in The Mountain

Abstract: This paper projects the problem of self identity through Anitas novel. An atmosphere of melancholy pervades in the novels where her protagonists are unable to resolve their crisis and there is the looming shadow of death lurking in the corner of their minds, bringing darkness in their lives. Identity crisis is a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a persons sense of identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in society.Society plays an important role in causing identity crisis in Desai’s characters.
