Victimised Afro American Women and Their Redemption in Katherine Stockett’s the Help
Name of Author :
Mrs. K Prameeela Rani
Abstract:
Literature is not all about the creative writing techniques, ideas or imagination and creativity of eminent writers. It informs a reader about the then existent society because any writing is influenced by the society. Literature is a field with a wide scope to explore all about a country based on the historical references. The novel The Help, a 2009 novel by Katherine Stockett speaks about the African Americans working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi, during the early 1960s when slavery was prevalent. Literature interprets reflecting norms and values, as revealed in the culture, the class struggle, and certain types of social facts. The novelist portrays the ill treatment meted out to the black maids in the form of racial discrimination. The white folks are imparted the idea of discrimination right from the young age. Many movements like the Civil Rights Movements have emerged to put an end to this trouble. The researcher seeks to explore the discrimination and intolerance and also the initiatives taken by Miss Skeeter to subvert the racist policies to redeem the maids by documenting the sad tales of the poverty ridden maids in her published book The Help.
