The Road to Liberty: Inquiring the Peregrinations of Pioneer Women Travel Writers of Yore
Name of Author :
Nirmal Joseph
Abstract:
These words by the Danish poet and novelist Hans Christian Andersen from The Fairy Tale of My Life: An Autobiography narrates the travelling experience. To travel is to live life to its fullest. Saint Augustine opines that The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. There is no scarcity of women travel writers at present. However 100 years before a lone woman in a foreign locale was a rarity. This paper focuses on such pioneering women travel writers from the bygone era who dared patriarchal norms in realizing their dreams to know the unknown. Their escapades are critical to feminist studies for they made sure travelling was no longer a masculine endeavour. This paper pays tribute to those travels of liberation.
