Resisting Patriarchy placidly: Analysing New woman in Rama Mehta’s Inside the Haveli
Name of Author :
Rashi
Abstract:
Rama Mehta’s work Inside the Haveli has hardly been evaluated from the view point of patriarchal resistance and new woman. Per se, in the present article, the aforementioned novel has been analysed from the perspective of the new woman whose distinctive qualities have been thoroughly portrayed through the portrayal of Geeta in the novel. It seeks to show how the writer through her woman character have been able to depict the image of the new woman. The new woman is the one who has come of age, who has a position that is not compliant to patriarchal standards, who is observant and conscious of the milieu she lives in and who has the capability to live life on her own terms in a male-dominated society. The article also contains the social exploration of the patriarchal set-up and psychological growth of the new woman as reflected in the novel.
