Cries of the Khanas: Subordination and Suppression of the Other in Bani Basu’s Khanamihirer Dhipi (Khauna Mihir’s Mound)
Name of Author :
Tania Khatun
Abstract:
Subordination and suppression of women are ages old problems that they are confronting in their daily life. Subordination of women means the inferior position of women to men. It refers to their lack of access to resources and decision making and to the patriarchal domination that women are subjected to in most societies. The feeling of powerlessness, discrimination and experience of limited self-esteem and self-confidence contribute to the subordination of women and thus lead to their suppression. Patriarchy pre-supposes the natural superiority of male over female and upholds women’s dependence on, and subordination to, man in all spheres of life. Consequently, patriarchal values restrict women’s mobility and reject their freedom over themselves as well as their property. As a dominant social system patriarchy has chained all the potentials of women through the ages and made them a goddess of sacrifice in the name of family, marriage and motherhood.
