Aggression to Resilience: A Reading of Khaled Hosseinis A Thousand Splendid Suns
Name of Author :
R K Rebelin
Abstract:
Women are defined in relation to men and hence considered inferior to men. Afghan women experience a greater suffering in the world for a long period of time. Khaled Hosseini sympathetically and sensitively examines the condition of women in Afghanistan and women in general in his novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007). The novel portrays that women have been going through gender equality issues for ages. The paper focuses on the women who are deprived of their rights and their restrictions from education, choices and liberation that hinder their great potentials in the male dominated society. It also focuses on the frightful experiences and survival tactics of the women characters in a scene of heightened domestic oppression. It exposes the importance of endurance, education and uprising of women to survive. Eventually, their confidence and self-determination have helped them to break all the shackles.
