Dalit Womens Subjectivity in The Grip of Change by P.Sivakami
Name of Author :
Ranjana Nagar
Abstract:
Uma Chakravarti in Gendering Caste: Through a Feminist Lens argues that the entire system of social status, production, and reproduction is dependent on Savarna patriarchy. Savarna patriarchy, as a system for oppressing women, is inextricably linked to the caste system. Therefore, caste and gender in the Indian context are intertwined and influence one another. She further extends the argument and states that women play a very important role in preserving the caste system. Patriarchal laws assist in maintaining the hierarchy of restricted endogamous circles while maintaining the caste system. Women from all castes—high and low—have their lives shaped by caste and gender politics. Dalit lives are greatly impacted by the overlap of caste and gender hierarchy.
