Elements of Magical Realism in Marquezs One Hundred Years of Solitude
Name of Author :
Neha Manoj Varghese
Abstract:
Magical realism, which blurs the lines between magic and realism, popular among Latin American authors, depicts the real world through an everyday life that is both ordinary and magical. Authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez had a significant impact on magical realism. His brilliant magnum opus, One Hundred Years of Solitude, depicts the various stages of the Buendia Family over the course of seven generations and the history of the remote city that the aforementioned family founded, Macondo, which teems with men and women, frequently visited by gypsies carrying their latest inventions. He creates a tapestry of life and death, love and conflict, miracles and misfortunes during the course of this multi-generational tale, illuminating the evolution of our species. It is a prime example of magical realism, a representation of reality with mythical components that are quite normal to the inhabitants of Macondo.
