Representation of Disillusioned Identities faced by the Marginalized in Toni Morrisons The Bluest Eye and Leslie Marmon Silkos Ceremony
Name of Author :
Kirti Sharma, Dr. Sunil Kumar Jha
Abstract:
Literature about and by the minorities is not an alien concept in contemporary time. However, it is not and neither was, much widely talked about. American writers Toni Morrison and Leslie Marmon Silko are the celebrated writers who write about the deprivation and need of representation of the marginalized voices in their works. The psychological degradation due to the concept of hybridity causes a crisis in ones identity. While Morrisons The Bluest Eye focuses on the subjects trying every bit to assimilate with the mainstream culture at the cost of sacrificing of the young girl Pecola, Silko gives the readers an insight into how Tayo suffers and wishes to adopt hybrid identity but stays rooted in tradition and thus has instable identity. This paper deals with the hardships that a marginalized character faces in the quest of identity and acceptance in the community along with examining several movements in their struggles.
