Contextualising the Vulnerable Condition of Women Surrogates in Kishwar Desai’s Novel Origins of Love
Name of Author :
Ananya Banerjee
Abstract:
After crossing a million milestones, the journey of women in the path of liberation has seen a subtle establishment of true self-identity. The 21st century has seen women empowerment in various fields in India. Truly said by a saint that a woman has the power not only to handle their work efficiently but also are capable of enhancing the happiness and dividing the sorrows of her family. Despite being endowed with such inherent qualities, the hegemonic power structure has created a system of social structure where the indigenous women are still tormented in the name of poverty or their family. In this universe of binaries, the struggle of the oppressed in the hands of the oppressors is persisting. Though India is developing at a rapid pace yet there lies a section of women who are been utilised, oppressed, tortured, and butchered mercilessly by the cultured, educated, and powerful section of the society. In her oeuvre, Origins of Love, Kishwar Desai has attempted to focus on the enormously lucrative surrogacy industry where the helpless indigenous ladies, particularly from the lower strata of the Indian society, are driven to fight with their misery and poverty, just due to their poor and untouchable status.
