Becoming Indian through Transnational Investment in Property A Study of Telugu Diaspora
Name of Author :
Ratna Bharati B
Abstract:
The research intricately deals with construction and maintenance of Indian identity by the members of Telugu Diaspora living across several countries through personal investment in property, in the city of Hyderabad. Remittances can be understood as a consequence of diaspora seeking to engage or re-engage with the homeland. Therefore, the concepts of remittances, diaspora, transnationalism and identity are heavily interconnected. The aim behind exploring these ideas is to basically analyze how the members of diaspora wish to represent themselves both on an individual as well as a community level. Levitt explains the concept of simultaneity in which it is delineated that the members of diaspora may or may not often contemplate a return to their motherland yet the desire to remain connected with the homeland causes the inception of several transnational flows.
