Folk Reflection in Girish Karnads Hayavadana

Abstract:
Folklore is the collection of fictional stories about people, animals and myths. It is a revelation of human culture. It exposes tradition, customs and art forms. As a play Wright, Girish Karnad has treated a remarkable impact on the history of contemporary Indian Drama. His works have been successfully staged and promoted with keen interest. His two plays, Tuqhlaq and Hayavadana have reconsidered the form and structure of drama. This drama entwines folk elements together. The mysterious talks of dolls, the presence of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Kali, appearance of Hayavadana and transformation of Kapila and Devadatta weave folk reflections in the play. India is religiously diverse country. The majority of people are belived in Hinduism. The nature of Hinduism reflects various heterogeneous traditions and regional cultures. This play, Hayavadana reflected Indian cultural and traditional life. Girish Karnad is the most influential playwright of the contemporary India. His plays are integrated mythology and history with the contemporary to carve out the realities of sociological, religious and political realities of the present age. His plays are translated in to various languages, including English. His works reflects a stark picture of the society. Thus Girish Karnad, an Indian playwright has a significant contribution in overturning the theatre culture in India. He performs different roles as an actor, writer and director.
