Abstract:
Manju Kapur‟s novels present the struggle of the women to establish identity. Manju Kapur has presented a vivid portrayal of the women of 1940s and the events around the backdrop of Indian Independence. Difficult Daughters is a domestic and social novel. It is story of Virmati and her struggle in life. This novel is dedicated to author‟s mother, her mother, her father. The novel also represents the patriarchal setup where males dominate the female. Difficult Daughter is set against the historical background of the Indian partition. The protagonist Virmati is torn between family duties, the desire for education, and illicit love.
