Marriage, Education and Identity: Emancipation from Patriarchal Society A Study on Manju Kapurs Difficult Daughters

Abstract:
In India women under the patriarchal pressure and control were subjected to social ostracism and were not given importance. They were considered as weak, fragile creatures who survive under constant protection of men. But pre independent period sought to give women a longer stride women actively participated in the political and social movements like Arya Samaj, Brahama Samaj and furthermore education of the elite led to an independent thinking and to understand inequalities that existed in the patriarchal dominated Society. This paper tries to expound womens struggle for identity in 1940s conventional society that bind women and permit men to enjoy the bliss. Further aspires to focus on marriage which is used as an ultimate otherwise as a means to an end for women and education that resulted in revolt against these in equalities and discriminations as in Difficult Daughters by Manju Kapur.
