Abstract:
Vidya is very important in Indian Philosophical Systems. Vidya is a word derived from Sanskrit root vid and its meaning is to know, to understand, to perceive etc. Vidya is seen in all the texts of Indian Philosophy. Sanskrit word vidya as it was used by Rishies, Gurus or teachers of India, vid -ya means that which light up, illuminates. As such, it was identified with knowledge that illuminates the mind and soul, liberates from the fetters of ignorance - imbibed, assimilated with the help of Guru, who always guides one with the moral compass keeping one rooted to the truth, the righteousness. Vidya is not only acquired knowledge, it is a means to liberation and thus it is sacred in human life. It is a holistic concept in Indian Philosophy, not merely gaining education. Bhagavad Gita, which is the essence of all Upanishads, says Nahij nanena sadrusham pavithramiha vidyate. Meaning, In this world, there is nothing so sublime and Sacred as knowledge.
