Women “A Subverted Identity”- Tales of Ordeal in Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns.
Name of Author :
Shimi.V
Abstract:
This paper intends to delineate the saga of sufferings of two women to survive. The struggles, endurance and resistance of women in a Patriarchal society are the same in all over the world. The novel presents strict Islamic laws enforced in Afganisthan, forbidding women to travel alone, ordering her to wear a burqua whenever she goes out and punished adultery with stoning etc. The two major women characters represent the epitome of suffering under strict laws and domestic terrorism. Laila and Mariam are the spokespersons for many silently fuming women and for them empowerment is still a dream. The novel is the best example for how power structure devalues, degrades and enforces violence on women.
