Political Empowerment of Women: Its Necessity and Constitutional Safeguards in India
Name of Author :
Md Shahidur Rahman
Abstract:
The historical past of India has witnessed oppressions and atrocities against women in both the domestic and public spheres. Indian women were deprived of their social, economic and political rights. To undo the mistakes in the past, women need to be liberated from such bondages. Women Empowerment requires changing patriarchal Indian mindset and practices and enabling women to actively involve into the political life of the country. Political empowerment of women would throw open a wide avenue for participation in the decision making process and governance of the nation. In order that the political aspect of empowerment is realized, Constitutional safeguards of their political rights through reservation policies are in place. This constitutional mechanism is one way to ensure gender equality, which is a notion covered within the fold of the Doctrine of Equality. This paper seeks to thrown light on the said theme through analytical discourse.
