Abstract:
Mahesh Dattani is one of the popular dramatists in Indian English Literature. Gender Disparity attitude towards men and women have existed for generations and thus it affects the life of both genders. The root cause of gender inequality in Indian society lies in its patriarchy system. Tara is predominantly a play about the Indian parents preference for a male child over a female one. It gives as a picture of the helplessness of woman in our society. Tara is a play that questions the role of the society that treats the children of the same womb in two different ways. This paper proposes to analyse the male chauvinism prevalent in the society. It also exposes the corruption projected in the bureaucratic society and the ethical deterioration of the medical profession. The play Tara expresses the typical Indian mindset, giving preference to a male child over a female child. Tara depicts out the fact that the victims own mother preference is also to the male child which makes the play more dramatic powerful.
