Cultural Clash and Identity Crisis in Jhumpa Lahiris The Namesake
Name of Author :
Ms. P Sangeetha, Ms. M Amsaveni
Abstract:
The world has become a global village because of rapidly advancing technology. The desire for a better living has always compelled man to relocate from one location to another, frequently leaving his motherland. Of course, homesickness has subsided, but difficulties such as homelessness, settlement, identity, lifestyle, and so on remain on the horizon. The aim of the paper would be to analyse the difficulties of the second generation of Indian Diaspora, with particular reference to Jhumpa Lahiris work The Namesake. The story revolves around a Bengali couple who travel to America in order to start a new life away from all they are accustomed to. It explores the concept of cultural identity and identity crisis in a lucid and elegant prose. The paper would make an effort to investigate the American way of lifes competing appeals and the tug of war between two different cultures. The kinds of relationships that these characters develop over time in a strange nation, and how ones cultural identity is always determined by inherited ideals.
