Nature as a Living Entity in Jean Rhys Wide Sargasso Sea
Name of Author :
Shivani S, Dr. Shridevi P G
Abstract:
The present paper seeks to analyse Jean Rhyss Wide Sargasso Sea in the light of nature as a living entity, directly impacting the lives of the characters in the novel. Nature has positive and negative impact on Antoinette and Mr. Rochester respectively, throughout the novel. Nature is both a beauty and a nightmare at the same time. While Antoinette is comforted by it, Mr. Rochester is scared of it. Nature frees her but entraps him. It acts as her friend and her protector. Nature depicts life and death and where change and constance is found together in abundance. Antoinette believes that nature has its own boundaries and by crossing them, she would interfere the symbiotic relationship between nature and humans. She treats nature as a living entity and believes in maintaining its purity. Hence, scared of crossing the boundaries, she does not go very near it but seeks solace in it. Nature with all its elements, play a major role in bringing Rhys characters to life, while reinventing itself.
