Opportunities and Controversies in English Medium Instruction
Name of Author :
Varinder Singh, Dr Shamim Aara Hussain
Abstract:
India is incredibly unique in terms of its ethnolinguistic diversity, with both social multilingualism and individual plurilingualism at high levels. Therefore, since the past till the present, educationalists have been debating about language to be used as a medium of instruction. Consequently, the use of English as a language of instruction is a fast-spreading phenomena at the school and higher education levels. This led to rise in the number of public and private schools where English is the primary medium of instruction. Although English in India is most preferred language used in education, despite this, there are several topical academic issues with English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI), that are discussed in this paper. In addition to this, paper also focuses on the arguments that favors the EMI.
