Mechanics of Storytelling and Counter-Memory in Diane Glancys Pushing the Bear
Name of Author :
Hancy Varghese P, Dr. Sheena John
Abstract:
Counter-Memory, first introduced in Michel Foucaults essay, Nietzche, genealogy, History, describes the attempts at memory formation that counter dominant, mainstream histories. It can be defined as resistance against the official discourses of historical continuity, so-called regimes of truth, and it is exercised by those who are marginalized by power (Radzobe 94). Mainstream memory creates the popular discourses of history. counter-memory practices depends on the existence of marginal memories that can create alternate histories. Diane Glancys Pushing the Bear is one such attempt to create a detailed, alternate record of the historical Trail of Tears during which, the Cherokees of North Carolina were displaced from their original homes.
