Name of Author :
S Dhanalakshmi
Abstract:
The complexity and the modern social system frequently discourage an independent one psychologically, socially, and economically. The novels of Anita Desai are basically female oriented. She scrutinize into their problems, be it of a daughter, sister, mother, grand-mother or a wife. Desai depicts the Indian women as a fighter, a victim, a heroine and in later novels ultimately a winner because of her stubborn spirit and attitude of compromise. Desai has portrayed both kinds of women and men- those who are symbols of growth and change, those who are powerful means of withdrawal, regression, decay, death and destruction. Desai does not pursue many capricious things in her novels, but the author portrays an actual Indian lives and the social structures. She shows the insufficiency of the Indian society by painting the actual scenes of everyday life to her readers. She shows how the society works, and how it can put pressure on people sometimes to the point of destroying individuals. Anita Desai uniquely discussed with the inner world of the characters.
