Rebecca Solnits Men Explain Things to Me: Archipelago of Arrogance
Name of Author :
Dr. Ekta Chahal
Abstract:
Rebecca Solnit, born in 1961, is an American writer, historian and activist who has written 19 books. For more than two decades, Rebecca Solnit has been a favourite of the literati: penning exquisite essays that move between the political and the personal, the intellectual and the earthy. Then came mansplaining. The book, Men Explain Things to Me which she published in 2014, contains essays that discuss gender politics. The author looks at the progress of the feminist movement. She says that we can measure this by looking at how womens rights have changed cultural views and beliefs about gender. This is because these changes are irreversible, even though there may be a backlash against feminism from conservative forces. In my research paper the study aims to examining wider patterns of oppression and abuse stemming from silencing voices through conversation. The study will attempt to explore violence against women, issue of same sex and how men silence women by talking over them and telling them what to think about their ideas instead of listening them.
