Archaeological Remains in the North-Eastern Region of India
Name of Author :
Shring Dao Langthasa
Abstract:
The study of archaeology in the North-Eastern Region began with the description of the temple and ruins by Westmacott, a British explorer. Subsequently, various other explorers worked on different aspects of the regions archaeology. Their work focused primarily on the collection and description of ancient remains found overground. This process changed during the independence period when cultural remains began to be unearthed from their stratigraphy. Excavations since then have brought to light varied remains from different cultural periods. However, the reports of the findings remain scattered and attempts were rarely made to revisit them. A comprehensive study of these remains showed the existence of two varied cultures in the region that co-existed simultaneously. One was the primeval culture that existed in the hills and mountains and the other was the urban culture in the plains and river valleys. Furthermore, the study made it possible to understand the culture and society of the regions bygone past.
