Food as Metaphor for Resilience, Reconciliation and Exoneration in Joanne Harris Five Quarters of the Orange

Abstract:
Joanne Harris is an Anglo-French author of fourteen novels, two cook books and many short stories. Her works are extremely diverse in nature which include magic realism, suspense, historical fiction, mythology and fantasy.The novel, Five Quarters of Orange is about food and recipes as a metaphor for transformation. Food is always considered as a source of pleasure but in this novel it serves both as a weapon for vengeance and forgiveness.The protagonist Framboise, after many long years was able to come to reconciliation with her mother by cooking the recipes from her mothers scrap book. Recipes here function as pathway to the past and present, resilience, reconciliation and exoneration between mother and daughter.
